This feature layer displays Energy Information Administration (EIA) interstate and intrastate natural gas pipelines within the United States. The U.S. natural gas pipeline network is a highly integrated network that moves natural gas throughout the continental United States. The pipeline network has about 3 million miles of mainline and other pipelines that link natural gas production areas and storage facilities with consumers. This natural gas transportation network delivered more than 25 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of natural gas in 2016 to about 74 million customers.

There are two types of natural gas networks within the United States. The largest system is the interstate pipeline system which means the pipelines cross one or more states. Two-thirds of the lower 48 States are almost totally dependent upon the interstate pipeline system for their supplies of natural gas. Today, almost every major metropolitan area in the United States is supplied by, or is the final destination of, one or more of the major interstate pipeline companies or their affiliates.

The other type of natural gas pipelines existing within the United States are the intrastate natural gas pipeline networks. Intrastate natural gas pipelines operate within State borders and link natural gas producers to local markets and to the interstate pipeline network. Approximately 29 percent of the total miles of natural gas pipelines in the U.S. are intrastate pipelines. Although an intrastate pipeline system is defined as one that operates totally within a State, an intrastate pipeline company may have operations in more than one State. As long as these operations are separate, that is, they do not physically interconnect, they are considered intrastate, and are not jurisdictional to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). More than 90 intrastate natural gas pipelines operate in the lower 48 States.

The source pipeline data was created by EIA using publicly available data from a variety of sources with varying scales and levels of accuracy.
